2011 has presented some challenges, but the able and creative team at Freshi has risen to the occasion and found a way to prosper and grow in ways unimagined just a few years ago.

On Wednesday, Dec. 14th, we took time out for a wonderful meal at Pichanha in Burbank and to recognize the individual achievements and hard work from the LA office staff and several teachers who together, make Freshi Media the leading edge company it has become. We are proud of our group, and plans for new programs (such as our online professional teacher development and a new professional level of trainings to corporations named "Freshi Corporate") are in the offing.

Long time teacher Kevin Paige and new staff member David Roman also attended our feast, but somehow slipped out before we realized it was picture time! Thanks guys.

It's been a great year, and we look forward to an even greater one in 2012! Happy Holidays and New Year! to all our staff and teachers, clients, partners, vendors, participants and those of you unmet we hope to include in our growing Freshi family. Freshi Rocks!!

In October, Freshi traveled East to Montclair State University (MSU) in New Jersey (13 miles outside of Manhattan) to hold a professional teacher development class titled "Digital Storytelling In the Classroom: Leading the Curve." On October 25 & 26, the group learned the basics of Digital filmmaking and Video Game design over an intensive 2-day training course, and discussions were held to do more online collaboration with the University in 2012.

Several evaluation comments read, "Fantastic! Better than expected," and "Wonderful!! Loved it!" The program is very hands on and presents a learning environment in which the teachers actually learn and do exactly what their students will eventually do in the classroom.

"We look forward to a long-term and substantive collaboration with MSU as more of our curriculum becomes available online. It's the way of the future, and MSU is a leader in teacher training and professional development. We are off to a great start," says Dr. Shoemaker.

Last week Freshi was honored to receive Mr. & Mrs. Steve and Cindy Keung at its Burbank offices all the way from Auckland, New Zealand. Introduced by filmmaker Christopher Wyatt (Napolen Dynamite, Café, Broken Hill), the group discussed how to begin Freshi programs in New Zealand and the showcasing of completed youth films in the International Family Film Festival's Youth Fest! for 2013.

Prospects for a "Freshi-New Zealand" documentary was also explored and is in the offing.

Steve is actively involved in Maori and indigenous initiatives and organizations. Currently, he serves in a number of roles and positions (including Trustee, Director, Deputy CEO) with several Maori organizations. One in particular is an Urban Maori Authority founded on the strength of its social, education, health, economic and spiritual indigenous self-determination agenda. In 2009, that Trust celebrated 25 years of existence. Another Trust that he is involved with governs a high profile "natural" caving tourism experience in New Zealand.

Steve is proud of what the indigenous Maori have achieved, but realizes more needs to be done in regards to empowering their youth with digital media, technological and communication skills to ensure for an even more sustainable future of prosperity and growth for his people - as Steve says, "Better educated youth are the key to a more positive and peaceful future for us and our entire world."

The Keungs left Freshi with a Film Club starter kit, various levels of Freshi filmmaking and video game design curricula, several cameras and a firm commitment to get a full fledged media program off the ground in New Zealand by 2012.

Freshi wishes the best for Steve and Cindy, and looks forward to building a meaningful relationship that will greatly benefit the youth of New Zealand with this dynamic couple in the years to come.

As autumn rains begin to fall in LA, what a busy 2011 summer it was for Freshi! Camps in LA, a professional "train the trainers" bootcamp here in Burbank and summer camps with Parks & Rec departments across California, Texas and Boston were abuzz this summer.

Regarding the LA Camp scene, Freshi, in collaboration with the IFFF (International Family Film Festival), hosted an intensive, 1-week film camp with youth from Mainland China and the United States.

The campers formed two film crews that collaborated throughout the week to conceptualize, storyboard, write a script, shoot, edit and polish their films complete with soundtracks all within a compact 5 days. Neither of the groups shared a common language (both English and Mandarin were spoken throughout the week), but it didn't matter. By the end of the week, they had developed a creative shorthand and the common language of filmmaking to communicate and share ideas about what each film would be.

One crew produced "3 Mimes in a Box" about a young man who constantly gets picked on by office mates and strangers only to compel the world through his rich imagination to be what he wants it to be, while the other crew made a short film entitled, "The Cubicle" about a young couple that finds true love in an office setting, despite the barriers any cubicle or social divides might try to block their deepest feelings for one another.

The week culminated in a film premiere that was attended by friends, staff and the families of the American campers. Beyond the useful film techniques and information learned by all, the youth got to learn something about their contemporaries from the other side of the world and make some long-lasting friendships with others that share a similar passion for storytelling.

Freshi "Bay Area" Team in place and updating training

Freshi Founders Suzanne & Chris Shoemaker organized a "meet & greet" of the Freshi Bay Area teaching staff last Saturday, May 14 at the Hyatt Hotel, Santa Clara Convention and Visitors Center in the heart of Silicone Valley. Eight staff members attended to discuss updates on Policy and Procedure, summer camp equipment deployment and discuss aspects and needs for the next live teacher training session to better acquaint staff with updated/changed equipment, editing techniques and ways to make Freshi Game Design/Filmmaking/Stop-Motion Animation lessons fresh and more exciting for the youth. Freshi continues to grow in NoCal, and a similar "meet & greet" session is planned for the Sacramento area staff, as well as for the SoCal team in San Diego - in spite of the current national recession, these times remain vital for spreading 21st Century skills to youth throughout our nation.

Freshi Founders Chris & Suzanne Shoemaker met 33 school coordinators and directors of Irvine County Schools after-school program today in Irvine to reacquaint with existing clients and outreach to new ones.

Digital Media remains a key component in after-school curriculum mix and as several Principals expressed, essential for the youth to learn in the "media-rich" world we live in. Freshi joined approx. 20 other companies offering after-school programs and services ranging from science education programs to theatrics to physical fitness programs such as tennis and basketball. Freshi looks forward to strengthening its outreach to the SoCal-OC region.

SUBMISSIONS OPEN FOR 2011 INTERNATIONAL FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL

The 16^th annual International Family Film Festival affirms that since the beginning of time “Great Stories Bring Families Together”. With that theme as a slogan, IFFF is scheduled from March 16-20, 2011at the Raleigh Studios, Hollywood, CA.

As is tradition, the festival features premieres and film screenings, the Screenwriters Showcase, Panel Discussions with industry professionals, and lots of opportunities to network with agents, producers, writers, distributors and working professionals in the film industry. Not only is this a great place to have your film screened or your script read, the festival also provides filmmakers an opportunity to conduct market research directly with their audience.

The categories for films are: drama, comedy, computer animation, classic animation, documentary, musical, and educational. Deadline for film and screenplay is January 16, 2011.

SOCIAL MEDIA FRIDAY: FORMS OF COMMUNICATION

The social media landscape is huge - and changing every day. Where just a short time ago we were in awe of our access to information, today the information comes to us. Email, once the primary form of communication on the internet, is now supplemental to the ironically passive social media platforms. We remain in touch with hundreds of friends on a daily basis - but with little effort.

Teens communicate more readily through texting than a traditional phone call. Where, less than a generation ago, actually talking on a cell phone was a cause of friction in school and at home, today addictive texting has, according to some reports, reached near-crisis proportions.

The very nature of communication is changing before our eyes; technology will likely evolve our forms of interaction even further - and in ways that will seem as alien as the concept of Facebook might have seemed ten or fifteen years ago. For education remain relevant and accessible, this blogger believes that it's imperative to understand (not necessarily adapt or even accept) these new, increasingly dominant methods of interaction.

MONDAY COMMENTARY: ART AS A MOTIVATING FACTOR

Cutbacks in every sector of society have become the norm today. Municipal city services are being cut back across the country, from police and fire to library hours. Education at every level is taking a hit. Arts education in elementary and secondary education has been under assault for years, and this latest crisis threatens to make it nearly nonexistent.

I'm not a statistician. I am, however, someone who has witnessed first hand the impact that the arts (and programs like Freshi) can have on at-risk students.

A number of years ago, before Freshi, I was asked to teach a program for Pasadena middle school students in music video production. The program was aimed at the so-called "at-risk" kids - those that found it a challenge to show up at school on time, if at all. Our workshop met in the early morning hours, before school. We were shooting as other kids began to arrive, so the kids creating the video became a center of attention. At the end of the semester, the video was shown at a school assembly.

School officials later told us that some of the students in our class had turned their academic life around - simply because they had a motivating factor to wake up early and come to school. Today, that motivating factor isn't the only advantage of providing arts in school - developing the skills for self-expression provide any child with a step-up in our social-media centered world.

SOCIAL MEDIA FRIDAY: BOOK RECOMMENDATION!

As a company on the cutting edge of applying communications technology for the common good, we're of course immersed in social media. We're starting a new series today, "Social Media Friday," where we'll share some of our resources and reflections on social media as it relates to our company and our mission. "Social Media," of course, is a new and rapidly evolving term, and means different things to different people. To us, it represents a set of tools to be applied different depending upon the situation - much like a set of wood-working tools can be used for uses as varied as building a house or a go-cart. Our efforts in educating youth on media creation, of course, incorporates a flexible social media strategy that not only connects our clients, but the kids we teach, as well.

One of our favorite books on developing a social media strategy is Gary Vaynerchuk's "Crush It!", a book which is relatively short, entertaining (Vaynerchuk is a a character all his own), concise - and realistic. It's not a how-to book providing step by step instructions - it's a lay of the land of social networking, and the suggestion of a strategy of how use those tools for your own specific purpose. This blogger highly recommends "Crush It"

MEDIA EMPOWERMENT

One essential characteristic of the youngest generation is their ability to communicate through media – to express themselves creatively through a host of platforms. Today, the tools to create music and video are simple to use. The ability to distribute creative work of all kinds has also expanded. Twenty-Four hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute.

For some, the reward in effective media creation is life-changing. The process of creating video production with others sometimes provides a bridge toward social interaction that hadn’t previously existed. We’ve seen the results.

At a Freshi high school program, a boy with Asperger’s syndrome proved to have a fertile, creative mind, and evolved during the course of the year-long program from an outcast with no friends, to an accepted – and central – member of the filmmaking team. His classmates learned to look past his social idiosyncrasies, accepting and celebrating his creative contributions. The experience built his confidence outside of the program, and his entire high school experience improved. By the end of the year, he was looking for a date to the prom.

We see similar scenarios every semester. While it may have become a cliché, art is empowering.

There is an ongoing argument that teaching media creation, and incorporating the use of media tools in education “dumbs down” the educational process. Pandering to kids’ short attention span, and meeting students on their own social media turf can be detrimental to their education. They won’t develop the discipline or basic skills to success and compete as they grow older.

This blogger is a filmmaker, not an educator. I wouldn’t be presumptuous as to tell professionals in education how to do their job. I can, however, offer my perspective as someone who was a creative kid. Whenever I could, I used my creative writing and filmmaking skills in completing assignments – it enhanced my focus on the subject at hand. Using creative writing and/or filmmaking, I channeled my creative interests into core subjects. In retrospect, I instinctively created my own personal Freshi InSchool program.

In the opinion of this blogger, media usage – however that might be defined – shouldn’t take over the educational process – but it is a valid tool with growing importance that should not be ignored.

Freshi touches lives. True, any successful educational media company can make that claim. In our case, however, we’re not simply creating media for children – but teaching those children the skills in creating their own media. It’s a powerful set of tools for a kid to wield, and for some, the Freshi can be life-changing.

Hyperbole? I would argue that for some kids, the “Freshi Experience” makes a real difference. This blogger has seen first hand the extent to which kids respond to our program.

What is the “Freshi Experience?” It incorporates a well thought-out curriculum, written by individuals who share our passion for media creation, a style of teaching which encourages engagement and ownership of creative work, and, finally, the recognition that media isn’t necessary an end in itself – it’s a tool to accomplish other goals. That’s why our InSchool program, which incorporates Freshi techniques into the teaching of core subjects, has been so successful.

I’ll never forget a parent after one of our Hollywood Film Camps thanking Freshi for “giving her son back to her.” Freshi lit a creative fire in a depressed, lonely boy and entirely changed his life.

This blogger, who also serves as Freshi's Director of Production, had an experience recently that really speaks to the the extraordinary power and timeliness of Freshi's mission.

Over quite a number of years, I've had the opportunity to shoot documentary, promotional and narrative videos in school settings. Naturally, when kids see a professional video camera, they have often asked if they're going to be on television - "What channel is it going to be on? What time?"

I was recently shooting footage of one of Freshi's game design programs, which allows children as young as eight years old design their own video games. One of the eight year old boys in the class, upon seeing my camera, came up to me, eyes wide and full of excitement.

This time, however, the question was different, "Are we going to be on the Internet?"

In this boy's life, television will be peripheral. Entertainment, information and communication will mostly be online. How well he'll succeed in the future will depend in large part on his ability to harness his media skills - creating and using an entirely new set of tools to express himself, explore the world and reach others.

His question suggests a turning point and a seminal moment when social skills and media creation begin to exist hand-in-hand. His perception of the world is already radically different than any previous generation. Freshi came about just for kids like him. Our InSchool and After-School programs were created to help his generation meet these unprecedented challenges.

The festival was the most successful to date, with numerous world premieres, some exciting surprises, and an atmosphere all its own. The entertainment industry is in major transition, and the IFFF is one of the few festivals to provide a level of access to independent filmmakers that is incomparable.

Freshi is all about providing access to the tools of filmmaking - the IFFF is all about promoting access to avenues of distribution. What a great combination.

On Thursday, the Freshi team visited an open house hosted by Cisco Systems, Inc., “the leading supplier of networking equipment and network management for the Internet.” We try to keep a close eye on developing technology, and even some of the high-end, cutting edge technology for which Cisco is known. For this blogger, the most exciting demonstration was of Cisco’s Telepresence system, which allows, with the appropriate high-speed connection, individuals geographically separated to engage in realistic face-to-face conferences. As you can see in the video, one configuration simulates a conference-room table. With large monitors, spatial audio (in other words, when the individual sitting on the right side of the room speaks, his audio will also originate from the right side of the room. Participants appear life-size, and with a superior visual quality that simulates, as close as possible, the advantages of face-to-face conversation.

As Freshi is intimately involved in creating new means of communication for individuals to create around the world, we’re particular excited about exploring the opportunities for such technologies to be employed in the educational environment. With face-to-face video chat becoming more and more common, Telepresence takes video chat close to simulating the workshop environment of interpersonal collaboration.

Cory Reeder was born and raised in Fullerton California. Since the age of ten he has been making films, beginning with his father's Super8 movie camera to currently mastering the latest HD technology.
He received his degree in Television and Film from Cal State University Fullerton, where as a side job he worked in various after school children's programs. After an internship at Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions, Cory moved on to found his own production company Renaissance Man Productions. RMP creates a variety of programming including; narrative features, TV shows, web series, documentaries and live events.
When not fulfilling his duties for RMP, Cory also freelance directs, writes, acts, edits, produces and trains youth in new media with Freshi.

FRESHI TEACHER PROFILE: MATTHEW BLACKWOOD

Matthew Rudo Blackwood was born and raised in Fresno, California. His passion for entertainment began in Elementary school when he was cast as a Turkey in the school Thanksgiving play. During one scene Matthew was chasing a little girl around the stage when his tail fell off. The room momentarily fell silent before applause and laughter echoed off the walls of the auditorium. From that moment on he knew that he wanted to bring joy and laughter to audiences over the world.

In high-school Matthew attended Roosevelt School of the Performing Arts before graduating from Bullard High school as a junior. He actually missed his high school graduation because he was flying to Indianapolis Indiana to attend the Nationals, in an event called Humorous Interpretation. Out of 100 competitors representing the top 2 from every State he placed 12th overall. Over the years he has been involved in theater, commercials, music and various short films.

As a singer/songwriter he has performed in various competitions and showcases including a recent MTV/Mooface Record Red Carpet event. You can check out the Red Carpet interview HERE. Freshi teacher Janice Wessner is a director, performer, playwright, and teaching artist. She earned her BA in Theatre from The Ohio State University in 2009, specializing in performance, directing, and the creation of new works.

Before moving to the Bay Area, she ran the flagship branch of the Urban Renaissance educational theatre outreach project in Columbus, OH, working with elementary and middle-school aged students living in underprivileged areas of the city.

Janice currently works with Freshi, and as the Director of Development for Bindlepunks, a theatre company she started with two other former OSU students. FRESHI ATTENDS TECHNOLOGY AND LEARNING CONFERENCE

Several Freshi Staff (Chris and Suzanne Shoemaker, Jason Medbury and Kevin Paige) recently returned from the T+L Conference (Technology plus Learning) in Denver, CO.

The show ran from October 27 - 29th, and Freshi promoted it's new video game design program with great interest from school districts and school boards across the country and abroad. "There was a marked increase of interest from school systems and administrators about our unique and scalable digital approach to presenting education in an engaging and entertaining way. We call it disguised education, because children are learning critical digital 21st century skills while having a blast!" commented Freshi Marketing director Chris Shoemaker.

Freshi also shared a booth beside CLICK TEAM, a new strategic partner in it's digital video game design curricula. Both companies benefited from this collaboration as it readily answered specific questions from conference attendees about how certain games aspects are designed and function and how within schools they are implemented.

The T+L Conference is presented by the National School Boards Association (NSBA). NSBA is a not-for-profit Federation of state associations of school boards across the United States. Its mission is to foster excellence and equity in public education through school board leadership. NSBA achieves that mission by representing the school board perspective before federal government agencies and with national organizations that affect education, and by providing vital information and services to state associations of school boards and local school boards throughout the nation.

This year’s T+L Conference focused on the critical issues facing schools today including Tools for Engagement, Strategies for Tough Economic Times, Leadership for Innovation, Technology & the Law, Taking 1:1 Learning to the Next Level, and Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce with S.T.E.M.

INTERNATIONAL FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL POSTER ART PREMIERES!

Chris Shoemaker, Freshi Co-founder, wearing his hat as the IFFF Executive Director, writes:

IFFF celebrates and showcases the spirit of independent filmmaking and screenwriting. This mission carries over to its annual selection of the poster art that also adorns the IFFF program book, ads, postcards, website and other festival promotional and marketing pieces.

Each year, festival organizers go in search of an outstanding and unique artist to graphically capture what the year’s festival is all about. Sometimes the artist finds his or her way to IFFF – it’s a very curious process, not unlike the creative process itself. Whether the artist is a graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, painter, sculptor or someone skilled in all those mediums, this artist creates a strong visual representation usually based on an idea, theme or provocative slogan determined by the festival.

Mark Allen of Mark Allen Design interprets this year’s slogan, Family Stories Are Timeless. Perhaps best known for his sense of illustrative whimsy and eccentric lettering style, this year’s IFFF poster art allows for films washing up on some distant island on a remote shore. And yes… those are reel sharks in the water! Mark’s work is indeed pure whimsy.

FRESHI TEACHER ANNE TURLEY'S LATEST EDITING VICTORY!

Anne Turley recently finished editing a documentary for actor Jim Grollman called "The Story Behind the Plot to Blow Up the Washington Monument." The film was accepted into the Chashama Film Festival in New York City and screens Sunday, October 25. Turley is a member of MPEG (Motion Picture Editors Guild) and WIF (Women in Film.) Grollman is a member of SAG and a former Freshi teacher. A character actor who has appeared in NYPD Blue and Becker, he also teaches stand-up comedy. Turley has edited such shows as Hard Copy, Extra and House Calls.

Freshi Teacher Anne Turley tells the story behind the camera:

They came up with this cute story and their Mom brought in all these pieces of material to use for the backgrounds and the Lincoln Logs and borrowed Lincoln Logs from another kid, I did help them some and we tied fishing line to the roofs for the twister. They used their own voices, which I love. It did take all week to shoot. They did take some breaks to do some smaller pieces. It was a brother and sister team, so they were able to keep each other's motivation going. Whew!

At the University of California Santa Cruz, Freshi founders Chris and Suzanne Shoemaker recently met with Rachel Bush, Freshi Filmmaker and second year UCSC film student. This past summer Rachel taught digital filmmaking for Freshi in Chico and is prepared to assist Freshi with its expanding programs in Northern California. Thanks for all the hard work and enthusiasm Rachel!

Rachel Bush writes:

I’ve always thought of film as a universal art form. Almost anyone can appreciate the messages and ideals it offers, regardless of one’s background. As cliché as that may sound, it’s easily one of the main reasons I’ve been drawn to the study of film. Working as an instructor for Freshi Films this summer only reinforced that belief. The experience was a daily reminder of just how successful the filming process can be for reaching any given individual’s fullest potential.

It’s no surprise then that the Freshi program was so beneficial for the three campers I taught with the autism spectrum “disorder” known as Asperger’s syndrome. I emphasize the quotations because these talented young campers seemed to have everything going for them besides a disorder. The process of brainstorming/filming/editing their own films served as a creative outlet that not only benefitted their social skills with other children, but allowed them to thrive at something they felt genuinely passionate about. For what may have been one of the first times in their lives, the focus wasn’t on comparing the differences between them and their peers. If they did stand out in any way, it was only due to their impressive talent. Within the group of students I taught that had Asperger’s syndrome, I was lucky enough to teach a very imaginative young boy, an extremely hard-working young teen, and another boy who was more artistic than I could have ever hoped to be at his age. They weren’t treated differently than any other students, and they didn’t expect to be either. When you’re in their presence, you don’t see kids afflicted by a syndrome. You see children who are completely satisfied with their opportunity to express their abilities. That reason alone is enough to make me proud to work for Freshi Films.

FRESHI DISCUSSES COLLABORATION WITH CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY

Freshi's digital youth filmmaking and video game design program is rapidly expanding in Northern California.

On September 18, Freshi founders Chris and Suzanne Shoemaker were hosted by faculty members Enid Baxter Blader, Chris Carpenter and Sheena Demayo of the Teledramatic Arts and Technology Department of the California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB).

Discussions between the two parties included exploring collaboration on future media summits, digital curricula and International youth film festivals and camps. The Shoemakers extended the invitation to include one or more of CSUMB's teen produced films in its upcoming Freshi Youth Film Festival (held on Children's Day, Nov. 21st in Los Angeles). Freshi also plans to hire select individuals from CSUMB's talent pool of aspiring film students and accomplished film alumni to teach Freshi film and video game programs (K-12) in the Monterey Bay area.

Chris Shoemaker summarized, "CSUMB is a dynamic campus that champions the digital age. Its faculty is staunchly committed to the independent vision of each student - that in itself was exciting and refreshing to learn. Freshi views this visit as an important first step to building a strong relationship with CSUMB in the months and years ahead."

Chris & Suzanne Shoemaker also spoke to a film class and held an informal Q&A over lunch with the faculty and students.

On behalf of the Shoemakers, Freshi sends a "Special Thanks" to Enid for organizing and hosting the visit, Chris Carpenter for leading the Department's tour, Sheena for making the Shoemakers feel most welcome and Howard Livingston for initially bringing everyone together.

Film and Screenplay Submissions are now being accepted from young filmmakers ages 8-18.

The 2009 Freshi Film Festival will honor and screen the winning films, and present scenes from the winning screenplays at the 2nd Annual Children's Day on November 21, 2009.

Organizers expect attendance at Children's Day to exceed 50,000. In addition to the Freshi Film Festival Tent, there will be Information Booths, Carnival Rides, Petting Zoo, David Beckham Soccer Academy, Rock Climbing and much more!

Deadline for submissions is October 15, 2009.

On September 9th, Freshi leaders and the International Family Film Festival founders Chris and Suzanne Shoemaker with Patte Dee McKee attended the "Target Terrace at L.A. Live," for its annual Community Celebration. Since IFFF's and Freshi's start (1994), Target has been a terrific Sponsor of both organization's efforts. Target announced the Education, Arts & Social Services organizations in LA County who received over $8.3M in 2008 from Target.

Talk about your giant graphics! Suzanne, Patte and I morphed into these characters shortly after our picture was taken (LOL!). Actually, this was the view from the terrace just behind us. Billed as the hottest spot to see and be seen in LA, L.A. Live (including the Grammy Museum a few floors below us) is certainly a place you want to visit in Los Angeles.
